Evaluation

Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge of real media products?

To create the video myself and my group we had to come up with an idea of what we wanted our video to turn out like. In order to do this we had to look at different media products which have been successful in the music industry. The main aim was to have clear connotations to the genre of the song we chose, through the music video, digipak and advertisement we produced.
We were influenced by different media products. We first started looking at different videos on the internet, I started by analysing the most popular videos that were of the same genre as the song we chose. You Tube was a massive help as it enabled us to have access to milliones of music videos. After analysing a large quantity of videos, we choose specific ones that we thought had a clear narrative (what we wanted to achieve) The genres we looked at was Indie/Pop/Rock the conventions, misc en scene that took place had some what a connatation with the song we chose to do.

YouTube was a great help as we have a wide range of videos to choose from helping us by influencing some of the ideas used in the successful videos.

The Black Eyed Peas- Where is the love?

This music video influenced the story that goes on during the video we created, the lyrics are also similar to the song we chose which was Sandi Thom - I wish I was a punk rocker. In this music video we see people suffering and asking why there is so much hurt going on in the world. Our music video also gives that message as the artist we created as she also wonders in the street singing "I was born too late, to a world that doesn't care". We were moved by the message of the song, also how they have portrayed the msg by using misc en scene, close up of children who seem to be suffering. The artist spreading the message around.

The Verve - Bittersweet symphony

Bittersweet symphony by the verve was a huge influence, the setting where the video take place is simple, on a road but it shows the indie/pop genre. The location we chose specifically to have the connotation with the genre, based in Camden Town, famously known for its retro/indie shops and market. The camera shots used in this video also inspired us to use them simarly to get the effect. The close up of the woman's face shows the anger she holds, the shot on the right is a screen shot of the similar camera shot we used in our video.

Question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Analysing different CDs and digipaks enabled to give me an aspect of how I may want my digipak and advertisement as a finish product. I chose to stick to female British artist as there is more of a connotation to the artist we created.

Pixie Lott

Looking at Pixie Lott's CD cover, video snaps and advertisement, there is a clear connotation between the three. Her face has been presented a lot of the time, as she is new artist, the audience needs to familiarise themselves with the artist, therefore making her face recognisable. This inspired me to do the same, we've used close -up shots in the music video, for the digipak and advertisement I've used the artist face more hoping to achieve the aim Pixie Lott has used.  The artist Pixie Lott is wearing mostly black I've tried to do the same, however using bright colours such as yellow and green, baring in mind what those colours represent as nature, sun, joyful etc. Making the genre of the song more obvious.

Melody Davis

Lily Allen

Looking at the way Lilly Allen's CD, advertisement and video has been put together uses the same technique Pixie Lott. The body language of Lily Allen shows exactly the audience she wants to attract, she looks carefree, chavy yet with attitude. I've applied this technique in my media products as well, by the facial expression the artist has a smile on the front and back of my digipak.

Question 3 -  How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Presention created on Prezi.com

Our Animatic storyboard created on Final Cut Pro

Question 4 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Unfortunately I couldn't find Digipak I have insted analysed CD packs as I will be doing a 4 sided Digipak.

Do's & Don't

The following points are to make sure I DO when making my digipak and advert:
  • To use a clear font
  • Use appropriate sizes for Images and Font
  • Use clear photos that are in focus
  • Use photos that are an approriate shape for the page
  • Use a layout that follows the rule of thirds for composition
  • Use an appropriate type face that follows Genre Conventions and A House Style
  • To be aware of where I will place the font, it must follow Genre Conventions and to Be Clear From A Distance
  • Follow the conventions of the 3 colour rule and use colour that is appropriate for Images, Font and Background
  • Think carefully about how I will use and intergrate Font, Text, language and Image
  • Use appropriate industry logos and conventions, properly positioned    Barcode Date Copyright Titles and Artist Name
IMPORTANTLY I SHOUDN'T :
  • Stretch images, this will make them out of focus
  • Use layer styles
  • Use unnecessary effects. Any effects used MUST suit the genre
  • Place text across the artist's face
  • Use a font simply because you 'like it'
  • Feel you need a seperate photo on every panel  BE CREATIVE

Mock Of Digipak

This is the a draft of how I've planned for my digipak to be

The Front is a long shot of the artist  -->

<-- The Back, a close-up of the artist works well as the songs will be on the back. As it identifies the artist with the audience, making her more recognizable.

A simple image of a flower is all i really need  as the CD will be placed here                                            -->
<--- The inside of the CD, I have used an image of a landscape because there will be more writing than any if the other sides of the digipak I wanted an image where there's not a lot of things going on. This image suits the genre as its in the open, nature, river, snow etc.
I hope by the end of my finished Digipak has a connotation with the genre of the artist.

Tutorial on Photoshop & Quark

We had a lesson on using the programme Quark and Photoshop on iMacs, I will be using these programmes to create my Digipak. I've learnt how to open and save projects also how to export the image from photoshop and import in Quark. There are many effects on Photoshop to help my digipak have a connotation to the genre we have chosen. The image below, you can see that I've been expermenting using different effects on the photo itself
Quark is very helpful as they have already created the layout I will need for my digipak, ranging from 4 - 8 sides, I haven't decided how many sides I want to use as I will have to confirm with the rest of my group. I need to take into mind where I will place the important information needed on the digipak; barcode, website etc.
I will make a rough sketch on my real digipak, taking into mind
  • The information that will need to be on the digipak
  • The digipak needs to illustrate the genre the artist performs
  • NOT TO STRETCH ANY PHOTOS!!
  • Be original yet very creative in order to draw a lot of attention from the audience

Feedback From rough cut

Looking at the rough cut there are many faults, from the lipsinging to the story of the video itself. From our pitch we planned on using less than 2 mid shots however looking at the footage we have used many mid shots. The location and setting of the video worked well however these places were too overcroweded making it hard to work at a steady pace.
We started brainstorming on the possible effects we could use not only to make the video more attractive but also have somewhat a connotation with the story line, we came up with using fades, cross disolves, sepia and gamma tones. Thinking about the contrast between the " Real World" and "Dream World".
We also changed the homeless character in our film as we felt the new character playing the role would suit much better. Looking back at the rough cut many of the shots are very shakey making the artist face go our of the screen, we will need to shoot with a tripod as it would make it more steady.

Audience Feedback

We presented our rough cut to our fellow peers the response we got back was surprising they liked it yet they did give us constructive critism. Before showing it we already knew we had a lot of work to do for the real edit. As the students observed the video, we achieved some of the aims we want from the audience such as laughing, moving to the beat and understanding the story line.

We asked for points to think about when constructing our real edit, the response was:
  • To think about shooting new scenes, to make the sequence much clearer.
  • Add special effects
  • Add transitions when "entering the dream" possibly use black and white to clarify the contrast between the " real world" and " dream world"
  • To use a wider variety of shots
We will take these points in mind, although we have already started to make other changes to our real edit too.

Final Video

Analysing past students work

Alex, Chris, Claudia & Grace from 283goswell on Vimeo.

Watching this groups work from last year shows the different types of shots I want to show in my groups video. The students who composed this video have used well misc en scene as it matches with the music very well. The narrative of the music works well as the character shows her happiness through her facial expression.

Video clip of our group Filming

FIlming in Camden Market wasn't as easy we thought it would be. Camden is an extremly busy area so there was many problems with people walking across our shot, and even market workers joining in the music video. This is a establishing shot we did of the location we filmed at.
