Mock up of advert
This is a mock up of my advert. When designing my final advert i will use this for inspiration. I will use the photo idea and place them in the middle. Also i will need to put short but important information on the advert so its its clear and not boring for the audience to read.

evaluation
Evaluation questions.
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The first video i have piked is the Ellie Goulding - "your song", this video has influenced me in many ways. Firstly the Mise en scene that has been used relates a little bit to my own music video. Casual clothing has been used. Ellie Goulding has casual clothing like my artist also they both wear colorful clothing. Also the setting is similar, there are some shots of Ellie Goulding walking outside and in my video my artist also does some shots that are outside. Similarly there are shots inside a house. Another similarity was both artists interact with other people in the video. Ellie Goulding hugs the girl in the park and in my video the artist Melody Davies pushes the two girls out the way (the fight scene) so there is interaction in both video's.
The second video i have picked is Pixie Lott - Turn it up video. The reason i have piked this video is because i believe it has the same type of target audience. Both my video and the Pixie Lott video has a young female artist. This will attract the same type of people. Another way both mine and this video relate to each other is by the mise-en-scene used e.g. the clothing are both colorful and bright. Also the clothing are casual but trendy clothes. I like the mid shots and long shots used in this video which influenced me when making my pop video.
Below are some of the screen shots from Ellie Gouldings's, Pixie Lott's and my pop video. All three have a extreme close up shot and the artist face which is placed on the right hand side.
Below are another three shots from all three video's of close up shots of the artist. All look very similar to each other but a little different at the same time.
Below are two screen shots of a waterfall, the top image from Ellie Gouldings video and the bottom image from my own pop video.
Below are shots of Pixie Lott's video and my video. These two shots show that the artist is interacting with other people in the video. This influences me to do the same thing in my video.
Here are some digipaks and advertisements i have looked at. They are very colorful and eye-catching and have influenced me in relating them to my own advertisement and digipak.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?
i believe in order for a music video to be successful it must have a clear visual link. This usually defines a product and gives in identity in order to be noticed by a certain type of target audience. The visual links that i have tried to make through out my digipak is one main colour which is pink. In my photo's i have used pink and have carried this out trough out the digipak. the reason i did this is so that each photo in the digipak would link to each other. In my advertisement there is pink used, reason for this was so it related to the digipak. Like the digipak the advert also had a image of the artists face. I did this because i wanted the digipak, advert and video to relate and look like a good promotional package. By relating each piece to the other i believe i have created a successful promotion package.
By looking at the colours used images and font i believe the audience would recognize them as linked products.
i believe my ancillary products were very successful as they related to each other very well. I think by taking the pop video into consideration and then designing the ancillary products well it will attract the target audience. How? firstly looking at the image of the artist i.e clothing, if people like the mise-en-scene the clothing then they will like the artist and buy the product. secondly the type of music, if i can express exactly what type of music is being portrait through the advert then the audience would what to know what this advert is about and will take time to read it.

Analysis of 3 adverts
I have picked three adverts from the same genre that relates to my music video.
This is a advert for the release of Sandi Thom's album:
Unlike her other album cover witch are always colorful this is the total opposite. This advert is all black and white. When designing my advert i will relate it similarly to what my digipak looks like. I will be doing this because i want both advert and digipak to match each other. Reason being for this is so the audience is aware of the same product that is being produced. Also i want the advert to symbolize the digipak so it appeals to the audience. Sandi Thom's advert has an image of her self which i think is and looks really good. soon as you see the poster you know automatically what it is about. So i will also be using an image when creating my advert.
This is the Oasis advert unlike the Sandi Thom advert this one contains color, which i will be using as well. I believe color makes things look more interesting and very eye catching. Also good use of text has been used in this advert. As you can see on the top it says very clearly and very brightly the name of the band. This makes it clear to understand what this advert it about. Also at the bottom the information given in clear and straight to the point (there is no long paragraph) which is good so the audience can straight away get the information they need to now. I will try avoiding putting to much text on my advert when creating it because nobody is going to stand around reading something for that long and i don't want the audience to get bored.
Duffy's advert is similar to Sandi Thom's advert as it is also in black and white. I like the way how Duffy's name is in a different font to the font that is used to give the information. It makes her name stand out and also compliments her photo as they are the only two things in the advert that stand out. However the information needs to be clear and in this advert i think it could use some improvement, due to the color of the font is is white and the font is placed on top of Duffy's hair which is blond therefor it camouflages the important text on the advert. When designing my advert i will most definitely take this into consideration.
This is the Ladytron advert. It is very different to the other adverts above. To me this advert looks like its a fashion advert for a retail store due to the band members lying down on the floor with nice garments on. Also i think there is too much information that any viewer wont want to read every single word. However i do like the font that has been used to write the name of the band. This is what i think is the only thing that will attract there target audience. So when designing my advert i will have a clear image of the artist and clear font saying the name of the artist and enough information for the audience to know what the advert is about. Also i will use a clear font so its understandable. I will need to take consideration of what colors match the genre and what colors would be appealing. On my advert i will also write the name of the best selling song from the album so it catches peoples attention as its already a best seller.
Shot list of fonts
Fonts that i can use when designing my digipak.
These are the possible fonts i could use whilst designing my digipak. Due to having an image of a flower on my digipak i would like to pick a font that relates to my image of the flower. Also having a pink and gray theme my font needs to compliment the color. Therefor i am thinking to use the balmorial font as i believe it does go with the color scheme as well as the genre. I was believe that it would appeal to the target audience.

Color scheme
My color scheme.
The colors that i will be using when designing my digipak are pinks and grays. From the set of photographs that were taken whilst filming the music video there was an image of a flower which i really liked and the color of the flower was pink. This is the reason why i will use pink. Pink is going to be the color that i will continue using through out my digipak. This color will link each part of the digipak to another as i will have some pink on each part of the digipak. Relating to what the song says "i wish i was a punk rocker" it talks about society and how things have changed and people are less caring nowadays. This shows how the society has become miserable and upsetting. Due to this i will be using the color gray as i believe it represent sadness.
Also i have to think about how these colors will relate to the genre and i think pink is a color that does relate to indie pop and also gray relates well as i have researched on other indie pop artists and have looked at there appearance as well as what there album cover/digipaks look like. The color scheme must relate to the genre so that is it attractive to the right target audience.
This is a color scheme i will be working around :
This is a pattern i could use in my digipak as it consists of flowers which relate to the lyrics in my pop video "i wish i was a punk rocker with Flowers in my hair":

The definition of a digipak
What is a digipak ?
A digipak is a case that is made from paperboard. Unlike a plastic CD case a digipak folds like a book. These digipaks usually consists of one or more plastic trays capable of holding CD's or DVD's. These are usually for CD's that are special edition. There are taller paperboard digipaks for special edition DVD's. Major record companies started using digipaks more commonly in comparison to the jewel case, this was simply due to the fact that sometimes the jewel cases were more vulnerable to cracking. This would lead the CD or DVD inside to get crushed. The paperboard digipaks had a disc tray inside the packaging. The teeth of the hub secured the disc in place in order for it not to get damaged. As time went by the digipak style became very popular amongst major record company's and recording artists in early 2000s.
Analysis of 3 digipaks
Analysis of 3 digipaks that relate to my digipak
The artist my digipak relates to is Sandi Thom due to using the song "wish i was a punk rocker"
Below are 3 other artist i believe relate to the genre of my artist which goes well with my pop video
This digipak is from the Oasis - Acoustic album, its from the same genre but is very different from the Sandi Thom digipak. Firstly unlike the Sandi Thom digipak this one has no image or photograph of the artist. However is uses nice bright colors like the Sandi Thom cover. In my own digipak i am also thinking to use bright color. I would like to use a color theme instead of randomly placing colors on my digipak. I believe it is important to pick colors wisely so the digipak can have a nice flow to it, meaning the color should relate to the text as well as the images. They should all compliment each other well in order to create a attractive digipak.
Duffy is an artist also of the same genre to my music video. Her digipak consist an image of her self. I am most definitely going to place an image/photograph of the artist on my digipak when designing it. I believe if there is an image of the artist then the audience can automatically see what this CD cover is about and could also relate to the artist. This can be done in various ways, some audience will obviously buy the album due to liking the music and others will buy it to follow a fashion trend. So by adding an images of what the artist looks like can get more people to buy the product and it would be successful.
Ladytron is a band that is from the same genre but the way the digipak is represented is very different to the rest. By looking at this cover i would not expect them to be a band. My instant thought is this artist is probably a female solo singer, due to the red and gray flower. But in fact Ladytron is a band that consists of two female and two male artists. Its very unclear to understand what the band is actually about. However the placement of the graphic design and text are very well placed. It doesn't look messy and all over the place. It looks very professional and neat. this is something i am going to take into consideration when designing my digipak. My digipak like the Ladytron digipak must look neat in order for it to be attractive.
Things i can take into consideration when designing my own digipak:
- by looking at other digipaks from artists of the same genre i can create one similar that will attract audience that like the genre i am working around
- good use of color
- good of clear text that is eye catching and understanding
- good use of layout
- no stretched images or photos
Friday, 7 January 2011
I will be talking about the Do's and Don'ts!
Don'ts!
- should not place text or graphic on top of the artist face, this makes the digipak look messy and unattractive
- don't use unnecessary effects
- do not stretch images this will make it look unprofessional and cheap looking, also it makes the image look out of focus
- layer style effects what the final image looks like so i will avoid using it
- don't randomly pick different colors for the text it must go with the genre
Do's!
- make sure a clear font is used
- font should follow the genre convention
- take the color theme into consideration and try following it through images as well as text
- use appropriate industry logo's and place them properly
- use a font size that compliments the image
- photos that are not stretched
- line up photos in comparison to the page
- use a font that is eye catching as well as clear
- take placement of where to put the text on the digipak into consideration
Photos plan to use
Four photographs for my digipak.
I have chosen four of these photographs to place in my digipak. In my digipak i have decided to follow a certain theme. this theme consists of the background (the outer part of the photograph) is in a gray color and the inner part (the middle of the photograph) is left colorful. This relates to my music video by showing the outer society is living in a gray miserable and up setting atmosphere. meanwhile the middle of the photograph is bright to show maybe there is still some hope left in the word. Lyrics from the song "i wish i was a punk rocker" shows the artist has hopes and dream about being something they enjoy and are happy with. In my photographs i have decided to run a color scheme through out it. This color scheme is the touch of gray on the out side and a hint of pink in the middle. reason why i piked gray is because it represents sadness and miserableness very well thus the song "i wish i was a punk rocker" talks about about how society nowadays are much more miserable and uncaring. The reason why i piked pink, is because i used the image of a pink flower to put in my digipak. Also its a bright color that represents happiness and joy. the reason why i used the flower image is due to the lyrics in the some " wish i was a punk rocker with Flowers in my hair". I am also going to use images of the artist to give identity to my product (digipak). i believe having an image of the artist defines what the digipak is about. I believe it connects to its audience and drags there attention towards it.
